"Baseball is said to have been invented by Abner Doubleday in 1839 in Cooperstown, New York. The story is more legend than fact.
Baseball is a game of legend -- athletic heroes and their amazing feats on the field of play. Babe Ruth pointing to the outfield, Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier -- these stories are known by old and young, fan and casual observer alike. For baseball is more than a sport, more than America's favorite pastime. It's reflection of America itself.
No there team sport emphasizes the individual as much as baseball and no individuals are so revered and remembered as baseball's heroes. These are the Shining Stars of Baseball, whose brilliant achievements spark excitement and kindle memories for generations.
"Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore, MD on Feb 6, 1895. He was placed in St. Mary's Industrial School when he was 7, and it was there that he learned to play baseball. In 1914, through the help of a school priest, Ruth began to play with the Baltimore Orioles under manager Jack Dunn. He earned his nickname on the first day of practice, when a coach sneered, "Here's another on of Dunn's babes." Ruth went on to spend 15 years with the N.Y. Yankees and hold or share about 60 records, with 28 made in World Series games. Among them were his record of pitching 29 consecutive scoreless innings in World Series play and his total of 714 major league homers -- not including 15 series homers. He also hit 60 home runs in 154-game season. The Babe died Aug. 16, 1948."
