Grand Austria Hotel is an economic dice-drafting board game by Italian duo Simone Luciani and Virginio Gigli. Set in Vienna, 2-4 players will jump into the role of hotel management - and hopefully not in a Basil Fawlty manner. Here you'll need to attract guests into your hotel's restaurant, fulfilling their food/drink orders before preparing them rooms for the night. Remember to keep in the Austrian Emperor's good books though, because he'll be inspecting your hotel every so often... There are seven rounds in Grand Austria Hotel. Players each have their own hotel player mat, which shows a cross-section view of their hotel, a space for their kitchen and three tables in their modest restaurant. A number of D6 dice are rolled at the start of each round, and are allocated to one of six actions. In player order, players will pick one dice, and get to do that action (usually with a bonus depending on how many dice there are currently present of that number). There are clever ways to manipulate some of these dice, but sometimes this costs you hard-earned Kroner... And like in real life, it's far easier to spend money than it is to earn it! Dice let you acquire cake, strudel, coffee and wine (you'll need a constant range of these to complete guest orders). They also help you prepare rooms, earn money or prestige with the Emperor, or discounts on hiring staff cards. Once guests have received their required food/drink, you can move them into a room - providing you've prepared the right room for them, that is. Guests - as we all know - are fussy: they want to stay in specific-coloured suites! But once housed, they also give you a 'tip' (an immediate reward, shown on their card). It's so satisfying to build up efficient combos that can snowball into you earning mega-points! Points are up for grabs all over in Grand Austria Hotel - for getting guests into rooms, housing guests in more desirable elevated rooms, impressing the Emperor (at the end of rounds three, five and seven), and some staff offer you end-game points in a set collection nature, modular mini-missions to complete... The list goes on! As well as having an enjoyable theme that knits the gameplay together, Grand Austria Hotel looks sharp on the table with wonderful artwork from Klemens Franz.
