Artist Bio:

Originally from Pretoria in South Africa, Bölke graduated with a degree in Fine and Applied Arts (B-Tech) in 2015. He continued on to receive his PGCE in Fine and Applied Art in 2016. After his studies he went on to teach Visual art in Both South Africa, Kuwait and China. During his time in South Africa he has participated in Group exhibitions and also worked on creating art for the American Embassy’s 4th of July party.

Bölke then returned to Cape Town in South Africa to pursue his art career. Bölke started experimenting with the Embroidery medium during his studies and has continued to experiment and work in embroidery and mixed media. Bölke has continued to Exhibit in Galleries in the Western Cape and you can find his work on permanent display at Rossouw Modern Gallery in Hermanus. In 2024 J.C. Bölke received a “Highly Recommended Artist” certificate finishing in the top just after 3rd place for Vuleke 2024 Art Competition.

“I mostly use embroidery thread in my artworks. I like that it plays with the idea of masculinity and femininity, me being a man using a traditionally craft and female medium. This could bring up questions people have of sexuality, which I sometimes use as inspiration. The process of creating my artworks using thread has become a sort of meditation, trying to capture emotions in my portraits using colour and thread and then repeating the process.”

Inspiration:

What inspired me for the artwork was the theme “rainbow Renaissance.”. I decided to choose one of my favourite artists, Leonardo Da Vinci and one of his most famous artworks ‘The Mona Lisa’.
Since South Africans are known as the Rainbow Nation, I decided to make my artwork colourful and put Cape Town and Table Mountain as the background of my artwork, as it is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. I chose to use a coloured woman to represent our nation and the Cape. I also decided to add the protea flowers to make it more Capetonian and show our national flower.

All of this represents the beauty of South Africans and our nation. We all bleed the same, we are all human, we are the Rainbow Nation.

All I use…from NB to 5!
Have used this brand for years, for many children, in sizes from NB to 5! Have used other “natural/organic” brands, but come back to these. They are softer than 7th Gen and more absorbent. Also more absorbent than Honest Co. Earth’s Best also had great diapers, but are no longer available. I like that Babyganics has added the “wetness detector strip,” as it makes it handy for quick checks. The price is middle of the road, as far as natural/organic/chlorine free diapers go. The NB option is wonderful, as other brands (like Bambo Nature and Eco by Naty) start at 1s, which are too big for newborns.

Great ingredients, flawed product
I’ve been using these because they are TCF (total chlorine free) but unfortunately the tabs are hard to open on the side and tend to rip off easily…wasting a new, clean diaper. i’m contemplating switching brands :(

These are very cheaply made and barely stay on. The clasp to keep the diapers closed breaks half of the time when I'm trying to put a fresh diaper on. Won't be buying these again.

Works Well
These diapers fit well right now, but like any diaper, we will be watching the weight of the baby and move up a size as the weight limit gets close, as that affects the amount of leakage that can occur. They are thin and easy to fit in a small diaper bag that goes anywhere, yet they are also absorbent. The designs are cute, and I like that it has a wetness indicator on the outside. They are absorbent for a few hours, but I wouldn't trust them for more than 4 hours because they are thin; however, that's the negative of any thinner diaper on the market, at least that's what I've found. The baby doesn't suffer from any irritation on his sensitive skin, which is also a big plus and is a necessity, as far as I'm concerned.

I've used babyganics for two children and will never buy again
I've used babyganics diapers for years and have always loved them. They used to be soft, incredibly absorbent and with a minimalist design that didn't show through light colored baby clothes. They were the diapers I recommended to everyone as a cloth diaper alternative and I was willing to pay the extra $ for them. What happened?!?! These have a brightly colored yet faded appearing design on them, they are rough and they constantly leak (like EVERY time). They are also small! I sized up one as I always used to do with babyganics but these size 2 diapers for 12-18 lb babies barely fit my 10 lb baby. I switched to Millie Moon diapers and find them a million times better. They're everything babyganics used to be.
