Opals that are gem-quality can flash every color in the color spectrum. Some opals color and intensity actually surpasses that of the ”fire” in diamonds. Some of the finest opals are comparative in price by carat to that of diamonds, rubies or emeralds. Opal is an extremely popular gem stone used in jewelry. However, if it is set in a ring the setting should encase the whole stone as it has a hardness of about 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale and the opal needs to be protected. Opal is a hydrous silicon dioxide and is without a crystalline structure which is to say it is amorphous, without a definite chemical composition. This makes opal a mineraloid verses a mineral.
We have four different types of opal that we are featuring which have been mined from the earth, Australian Bolder, Ethiopian, Dendritic and Hi Morado.
