A fine French Empire period bibliotheque handcrafted from select French walnut by skilled artisans from Lyon during the First Empire of Napoleon, circa early 1800s. The upper bookcase of this grand piece boasts a stepped cornice over a frieze with bronze doré wreaths. The upper cabinet features the original glazed panel doors with two adjustable interior shelves and the original leather pull out slide. The lower cabinet is fitted with two drawers above molded, panel doors that open to a single interior shelf. Both the upper and lower doors are flanked by turned columns fitted with bronze doré mounts. All raised on carved block feet. This rare piece, with its classic straight lines, decorative motifs, and original bronze hardware, all typical of the Empire period, is a fine example of a French style intended to clearly express the imperial majesty of Napoleonic France.
Transform your office or library into a special place where you can display your priceless book collection, family heirlooms, or sports and hunting trophies just as the French did hundreds of years ago with this grand 19th century French Empire period bibliotheque. A grand bookcase such as this one was designed to display fine and rare books (and sometimes sports and hunting trophies) collected by the owner, and to reflect the style and manner of the owner who commissioned its production. Use the leather slide to mix and serve drinks. During the 18th and 19th centuries in France, formal educations were so expensive that the majority of people couldn't afford one. In addition, books, like the bookcases made to store and protect them, were very costly. Therefore, exceptional pieces like this are becoming harder to find. This would also be perfect in a dining room to display china, silver, or mix drinks.
