Het onvoorspelbare pad van Mannu-ki brengt hem op de positie van hofschrijver. Verraad dwingt hem opnieuw te vluchten. Zijn lange tocht leidt hem uiteindelijk naar Jeruzalem. Nebukadnezar is vastbesloten de opstandige stad klein te krijgen. Terwijl de stad ten onder gaat, houdt Elisama vast aan de hoop dat er een keer zal komen in haar lot.
