Pinus peuce wordt in Nederland ook wel de Macedonische den of de Balkanden genoemd. Het is een naaldboom die ongeveer 15 á 20 meter hoog en 5 á 8 meter breed wordt. Deze Pinus soort groeit smal piramidevormig en heeft een dichte kroon. De Pinus peuce is uitstekend voor solitair beplanting in een grote tuin. Zijn grijsgroene naalden behoudt hij in de wintermaanden en zorgt dus voor groen gedurende het gehele jaar. De conifeer is een voedselboom voor bomen, waardoor hij vogels naar uw tuin trekt.

Gewasgroep en herkomst

De Pinus peuce is familie van de Pinaceae, oftewel de Dennenfamilie, en valt onder de coniferen. De Macedonische den heeft zijn herkomst in het Balkan gebied, om precies te zijn Albanië, Macedonië, Bulgarije Noord-Griekenland.

Plantkenmerken

Deze Pinus soort heeft vrij dikke naalden in een grijsgroene kleur, die behouden blijven gedurende de winter. Hij is goed winterhard en staat het beste op een zonnige of halfschaduw plek. De boom staat in mei /juni in een gele onopvallende bloei, deze bloesem geurt heerlijk, waardoor de boom ook geschikt is voor de aanplant van een geurtuin. Na de bloeiperiode ontstaat vrucht aan de boom, in de vorm van kegels. De boom is doorgaans niet giftig voor mens of dier, voor vogels is het zelfs een voedselbron. De Pinus peuce kan niet tegen verharding, maar echter in elke grondsoort geplant worden, dus zand- leem- en kleigrond. Ook kan de boom goed tegen wind en is hij goed winterhard. Verder is deze soort ongevoelig voor wolluis.

Groeiplaats en onderhoud

De Pinus peuce is geschikt om te planten in parken en grote tuinen. De soort is zeer geschikt om als solitair te planten, snoei is daarbij niet nodig. Betreft het water geven, de eerste twee groeiseizoenen heeft de boom genoeg water nodig, wekelijks één grote gift.
