Dit geheel is opgehangen in de met vloeistof gevulde kompasketel die aan de bovenzijde is afgesloten door het dekglas, waarop een centerdop is aangebracht om het peiltoestel te centreren. De kompasketel heeft een zeilstreep die de langsscheepse richting van het kompas aangeeft. De kompasketel is cardanisch opgehangen in het nachthuis dat daarnaast de diverse compensatiemiddelen herbergt.
