Met een knipoog naar Erasmus (Lof der zotheid) proberen de auteurs een antwoord te vinden op de fundamentele vraag hoe we overtuigingen kunnen hebben zonder daarbij fanatiek te worden. Voor al ons doen en laten, niet alleen op het gebied van de religie en de moraal, is deze vraag essentieel.

Over belangrijke zaken als verkrachting, marteling, racisme, vreemdelingenhaat, moord en doodstraf mogen wij niet twijfelen. Maar wat zijn de morele gronden voor het afwijzen van deze twijfel? Helpt het als we verwijzen naar God, de natuur of andere metafysische geboden en verboden?

Uiteindelijk geldt ook hier de gouden regel, al wat u niet wilt dat u geschiedt, doe dat ook een ander niet. De gulden middenweg tussen fundamentalisme en relativisme is volgens de auteurs de enig aanvaardbare koers. Voor een politiek van de matiging is de twijfel van essentieel belang. En die politiek van de matiging is nu actueler dan ooit.

Can't comment on the fit because we didn't take it out of the bag. For a proper review I guess I should have my son put it on and take a picture in daylight. But they do need to change the color name at least to "champagne tweed" or something. No idea whose job it was to call this color "celery". ;p
