De Ridderlijke Duitsche Orde, Balije van Utrecht is een adellijke instelling die haar oorsprong kan terugvoeren op de kruistochten. Het voortbestaan over een zo lange periode is bepaald geen vanzelfsprekendheid. Twee eeuwen geleden kwam er bijna een einde aan. Napoleon hief de orde in 1811 op en confisqueerde haar bezittingen. Ruim vier jaar later maakte koning Willem I het besluit ongedaan en gaf een groot deel van het bezit terug. In dit boek beschrijft Renger de Bruin hoe de Balije van Utrecht aan de ondergang ontsnapte. Daarbij speelden zowel interne als externe factoren een rol. Het verhaal wordt geplaatst in het brede verband van de Franse Revolutie en het streven van Napoleon, maar het gaat ook om personen zoals landcommandeur Volkier Rudolph Bentinck van Schoonheten. Zijn soms wanhopige strijd om te overleven is uiteindelijk succesvol gebleken.
