Oil Painting Techniques & Traditions with David Heskin
5 weeks of 'live' online courses, every Sunday from May 5th - June 2nd,
with 4 hours of class content each day.

SAVE 25% on all add-ons, including the additional recorded video course and sample pack of SOMA organic painting mediums.

This course is a deep exploration of methods and techniques. Each attendee will be encouraged to aim these resources in the direction that best serves their own vision, with Art being recognized as the place where skill and creativity merge into a unified expression.

While the word 'tradition' can often conjure a classical historic ideal, this course engages with tradition as the time-tested application of principles, materials and mediums to serve each artist's desired goals, rather than a formulaic style. There will be a lot of room for exploration and experimentation at each stage of this class series.

Each week addresses a stage of the evolution in an oil painting, applying a variety of traditional principles to inform the creation of new works. Numerous studies and exercises will build toward the execution of a main painting project. Each attendee can provide their own chosen subject matter and concepts to work from. We'll work on developing ideal reference materials in the first session.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Students need to have a small selection of brushes, oil paints, mediums and panels, and will have time between classes to develop their personal practice and preferences.

  • Panel (9x12", 11x14", 12x16")
If you are in the practice of preparing and priming your own panels, that will likely work for this course. We recorded a video course on traditional gesso panel preparation here (also available as a discounted add-on for this course).

  • Primed Paper or small panels for study paintings (Arches Oil Paper or primed watercolor paper) *This topic is covered in-depth in the first class.*

  • Brushes: A small selection of sable or synthetic sable brushes in filberts & rounds, and liners, with at least one flat glazing brush 1.5"-2".

  • Charcoal: vine (not pencils) & sand paper for sharpening

  • Oil Paint: There are not specific required colors for this class, however a good range of colors could include:
    Earth Pigments: Siennas, Umbers
Cool Colors: Ultramarine, Phthalo Blues & Greens, Viridian, Dioxazine or Manganese Violet
Warm Colors: Alizarin Crimson, Oxide Reds, Mars Yellow, Indian Yellow
White: Lead White or Titanium White
One aspect of this course is producing a wide range of outcomes with fewer colors on the palette. Using familiar colors that are already in your studio will work well, and there's always time between classes to pick up a new tube if desired.

  • Mediums:
      • Sun-thickened linseed oil
      • Gum Spirits of Turpentine
      • Canada Balsam (optional)

  • Small jars for mixing oil mediums
  • Oil palette & palette knife
  • Small ceramic glazing dish (plate or shallow bowl)
  • Waterproof Ink (shellac-based)

OPTIONAL MATERIALS
Throughout the 5 weeks of the course, attendees may pursue their own preferences when it comes to adding colors to a chosen palette or ideal surfaces for study paintings, as each different kind of surface will impact the outcomes. A textured surface, like Arches Oil Paper, will require stiffer brushes or more medium to cover well, whereas a smooth handmade gesso panel has the opposite characteristics. Watercolor paper, primed and pigmented with glue size or a modern matte medium can provide a solution for making a lot of low-cost surfaces to paint on. These can later be glued to a panel if desired.

They paid on the policy
I bought a four year replacement policy on my modem and two years into its lifespan it stopped working. I trouble shot with the company but we eventually determined it was dead. I contacted Asurion, they sent me a pre-paid address label, I mailed the defective modem, they found that it was dead and deposited a credit in the amount of the original purchase in my Amazon account, all within a few days. I am quite happy with the service. Just so you know, the reimbursement is through a gift card at Amazon which you can draw down against your purchases; it is not CASH.

Nearly 3 years later, Asurion had my back :)
In Nov of 2017 I bought a $900 35" Ultra wide PC monitor for Gaming and Work. It was made by a company called AOC/Envision and I bought it through amazon. The monitor had a 3 year warranty that I was still within but they said no to a defect that they said was only covered for 1 year, even though it wasn't the type of defect that was only covered for 1 year. LUCKILY, back in 2017 I had purchased an Asurion insurance policy with this monitor. I told an Asurion agent in a instant messaging chat window on the Asurion website my problem and she sent me postage in an email. I shipped my product and in 5 days from shipping it I received a text telling me that it was beyond repair and I would be getting a FULL REFUND! Not 2hr later, in an email, there it was, an amazon gift card code for $900 I will not be making any big purchases without an Asurion plan going forward. Happy customer Don't buy anything AOC

Received a refund
I purchased the 4-year protection plan offered at the time I purchased a refurbished printer. Seven months later the printer failed, so I went searching through my Amazon orders for my protection plan and located it. Once I created an account on Asurion's website it showed the the plan but it was not attached to a specific purchase, so I had to locate and upload the invoice for my printer. Once that was done, the policy still wasn't linked for some unknown reason. I proceeded to start the claim anyway stating that my printer had failed and I received an immediate reply stating that a box would be shipped to me for me to return the printer for inspection/repair. After a week I hadn't seen any additional info so I called their support phone #. The service was very good and they had to create a new case to replace the one I started online, and they assured me that a shipping box would be sent. About a week later I did receive the box with a prepaid shipping label to return the item by UPS. I packaged the printer up and sent it off. I received updates stating that they received it, were looking at it and attempting repairs. Everything appeared to be going along well, then out of the blue they sent me a notification of a full refund in the form of an Amazon gift card. Overall I'm satisfied and I'm glad I purchased the coverage.

Worst Experience of my Life
My Epson printer had problems with it's software in early mid April, while trying to resolve the software glitch which I could not, I found that every picture I had scanned for some time had lines running through it and no cleaning process or other process that Epson had would get rid of it, and everything I had scanned for my project, was ruined. I sent the machine to Asurion following their instructions and explaining the issues. They sent it back to me after a month saying they had double checked and fixed everything, I spent some time setting it all back up, only to find that exactly the same two issues were still present and the machine was unusable. I sent in a second request, this time they sent it back to me a month later saying they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Hooked it up again, same problem. I complained numerous times asked for them to warranty the item; they would not unless I sent it back to them and they kept it and then they would give me a credit on my amazon account to buy a new one. I packed it up and drove to UPS a third time and mailed it back to them, after about three weeks they sent me a note that they had it and that they were sending it back to me as they couldn't find anything wrong. Three times I ha filled out their entire sheet with product, date of purchase, problems detailed, receipts, picture of the lines in the photos that it was making over all the scanned photos. Then after two weeks of back and forth they sent me a message telling me they couldn't warranty it until I filled all this information out again on line. Then they told me they couldn't read the tiny print off the receipt printed off the Amazon site, which I cannot change. I then blew up the receipts and circled everything and sent it back to them again...of course they already had now five copies of this same information, they had paid for postage three times to NY and back to fix it and they still aren't able to process a payment to me????? Finally I get a call from a gentleman telling me that I will have a credit to my Amazon Card in 72 hours. Great. Then he calls me back the next day and says the warranty team has decided they would not warranty the item and credit me but they will mail me a check in 7 to 10 days. After over four months of this I received a check...will it bounce? I don't know yet. My project that I was working on was for my mother's Celebration of Life, I could not do what I wanted to do for her, this caused me emotional pain, as well as the obvious frustration of four months of aggravation and complete and total ineptitude on their part.
