Overview:
The Roxy Cichlid is a vibrantly colored Lake Malawi haplochromine known for its iridescent blue body, metallic sheen, and fiery orange or red highlights, especially in mature males. A relatively peaceful species compared to many African cichlids, Otopharynx sp. "Roxy" is prized for its striking coloration, graceful movement, and compatibility in hap or peacock cichlid communities.
Origin:
Believed to be a selectively bred or possibly undescribed species within the Otopharynx genus, the "Roxy" variant likely originates from Lake Malawi in East Africa. Not found in the wild under this name, it has become a favorite among aquarists for its colorful and manageable temperament.
Feeding:
Omnivorous with a preference for protein-rich diets. Feed a mix of high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina-based flakes, and occasional frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, krill, or bloodworms. Avoid overfeeding protein-heavy foods to prevent bloating.
Tank Mates:
Semi-aggressive but generally peaceful for a Malawi cichlid. Best kept with other haplochromines, Aulonocara (Peacocks), and similarly sized species. Avoid overly aggressive Mbuna or very delicate fish. Keep 1 male with multiple females or in male-only display tanks to reduce aggression.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
- pH: 7.8–8.6
- Hardness: 10–20 dGH
- Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons
- Provide rockwork, sandy substrate, and open swimming areas
Behavior & Personality:
- Males display intense coloration, especially during dominance or breeding
- Territorial but less aggressive than Mbuna or some haps
- Active and visually dynamic mid-water swimmers
Special Notes:
- May crossbreed with other Otopharynx or peacock types—avoid in mixed breeding tanks
- Best colors develop with stable water, high-quality diet, and low stress
- Not found in the wild—developed in captivity for the ornamental trade
The Roxy Cichlid is a perfect choice for aquarists looking to add vivid color and gentle energy to their African cichlid aquarium. Its shimmering hues and balanced temperament make it a standout among Lake Malawi showpieces.
