OverviewThe Antler Branching Hard Coral (Montipora sp.) is a small-polyp stony (SPS) coral known for its intricate, antler-like growth structure and fine, textured surface. Colonies display delicate, branching formations that resemble staghorn corals but with a smoother appearance and smaller polyps. Colours vary widely — from tan and green to purple, blue, red, or orange, depending on species and lighting intensity. Hardy for an SPS coral, Montipora is a favourite among reef aquarists seeking vibrant colour and dynamic form in their aquascapes.
OriginFound throughout the Indo-Pacific region, including Fiji, Indonesia, Tonga, and the Great Barrier Reef. Typically inhabits upper reef slopes and shallow lagoon areas exposed to strong light and moderate water flow.
FeedingMontipora corals are photosynthetic, housing zooxanthellae that provide most of their nutritional requirements. While they primarily rely on light, they also benefit from occasional supplemental feeding:
- Phytoplankton and zooplankton blends
- Coral-specific powdered or liquid micro foods
- Amino acid or trace element supplements
Feed 1–2 times per week during periods of polyp extension for enhanced growth and colour.
LightingModerate to high lighting. Provide intense, full-spectrum illumination from LED, T5, or metal halide fixtures. PAR levels between 200–350 ¬µmol/m¬≤/s are ideal.
- Under higher lighting, colours become more vivid and growth denser.
- In lower lighting, coral may brown or extend less.
Gradually acclimate to strong light to prevent bleaching.
Water FlowModerate to strong, turbulent flow. This species thrives in brisk, multidirectional currents that deliver oxygen and nutrients while keeping surfaces clear of detritus. Avoid direct, laminar jets that could erode tissue.
Placement- Position in the upper to mid-level regions of the aquarium.
- Mount securely to stable rockwork or frag plugs to accommodate upward, branching growth.
- Allow space for vertical expansion and avoid contact with aggressive neighbours or corals with long sweeper tentacles.
Peaceful and reef safe. Compatible with:
- All reef-safe fish (clownfish, gobies, tangs, wrasses, etc.)
- Reef-safe invertebrates (shrimp, snails, hermits, urchins)
- Other SPS corals and clams, provided there is adequate spacing
Avoid:
- Corals with strong stings or rapid overgrowth (e.g. Euphyllia, Galaxea, Palythoa)
- Fish known to nip at SPS polyps (certain angels or butterflies)
Peaceful. Does not possess strong stinging tentacles but can be outcompeted by aggressive neighbours. Maintain spacing of at least 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) from other corals.
Experience LevelIntermediate. The Antler Branching Montipora is one of the more forgiving SPS species, tolerant of minor fluctuations if general water quality remains high. It is an excellent choice for reef keepers transitioning from soft or LPS corals into SPS systems.
Water Parameters- Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
- Hardness (dKH): 8–12
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
- Phosphate: <0.03 ppm
- Nitrate: <10 ppm
- Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons (280L) recommended for stable conditions
Regular testing and dosing (calcium, alkalinity, magnesium) are essential for skeletal growth and health.
Reef CompatibilityFully reef safe. The Antler Branching Montipora adds intricate structure and vibrant colour to mixed or SPS-dominant reef systems. Fast-growing under ideal conditions, it forms complex colonies that provide natural shelter for small reef fish and invertebrates.
