Patterns are creating beautiful electronic drone pop that makes you feel like you’re flying”  – The Guardian

We never really had Patterns down as masters of Acoustics and Oneirology. Bedroom dreamers maybe, a Mancunian guitar band of course, but with Waking Lines – the eagerly anticipated debut album – this is a band marking themselves out as true scientists of songcraft. With its array of field recordings, samples, original compositions and an epic haze of spellbinding loops, sonic sparks are set to fly from this thoroughly modern shoegaze-pop record.

“The title-track is constructed from samples of bells we found in a local monastery,” reveals singer Ciaran. “It’s an attempt to capture the solitude of sleeplessness and the absurd wonderings of a tired mind. It also serves as the clearest expression of the album’s themes of sleep, memory and loss.”

Patterns’ fusion of head and heart may well induce a dreamlike state but across Waking Lines’ 10 tracks, every note has been constructed with meticulous focus. This is a band who’ve always known what they wanted to achieve – a group who together and individually, have spent time honing their craft not to mention their spectacularly colourful live performances into an entity that’s indisputably Patterns.

“Listening to American bands like Deerhunter and Animal Collective, we learned you can be different and still be a guitar band” Ciaran says. “Once Patterns formed we knew exactly what we wanted to do with it, and recent shows have been a culmination of a lot of things, including the use of visuals and making it a real experience to come and see us play.”

Made up of foursome Ciaran McAuley (vocals/guitar/keyboards), Alex Hillhouse (bass/samplers), Jamie Lynch (drums) and Laurence Radford (guitar/samplers), the band’s unique approach is what has had DJs from Mary Anne Hobbs and BBC 6music’s Steve Lamacq foaming at the microphone. Upon hearing Patterns’ equally glistening and smouldering wall of noise, Huw Stevens picked the band to perform at Swn Festival, Rob Da Bank chose them to play at Bestival, and there have been shows all over France and Spain, not to mention a scholarly hometown show amongst the book shelves of Manchester’s John Rylands library. Already Waking Lines has been a long time coming, but it’s been well worth the wait.

Complemented by an array of psychedelic visuals, Patterns’ knack for transcending both time and space can transform even the dingiest back room of a pub into a star-filled galaxy with an array of shimmering, delicately melded guitars and evocative electronica. Take recent single ‘Blood’ which was mainly inspired by the band’s fascination with aesthetics; “it inhabits a fantasy space and was conceived by trying to express through sound how it feels to watch VHS,” Ciaran reveals. Adds Alex, “We bought a load of vintage VHS equipment and experimented with feedback effects to create fractal patterns, which led to the video and the artwork for the single.”

Abandoning normal recording techniques and expensive producers the band opted instead to record the album themselves. With one good microphone and a laptop they have managed to create an infinitely large imaginary space to express their vision. From ‘This Haze’ which was written eschewing male ‘indie’ singer conventions by thinking of how a woman might sound had she sang instead, right through to ‘Our Ego’, a song about the use of psychedelic drugs in psychotherapy in the 60s, Waking Lines flawlessly depicts that point where dreams and reality meet. ‘Broken Trains’ is an anthemic statement of intent, it’s driven drum sections cutting like razor-sharp shards of light through water, whilst ‘Induction’s ethereal tessellations of sound dance like the Northern Lights through a foggy gauze.

“The hazy nature of our production and decision to avoid linear story telling in the lyrics is meant to create a similar kind of emotional response to the portrayal of memory and the unconscious within surrealist art like that by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali,” explains Ciaran. “It’s like those weird dreams which feel familiar but quite alien at the same time.”

A word to the wise, it’s time to wake up. Patterns are here to open your mind and shape your world.

Good value, packed nice and small for travel or gifting, fluffs up thick
I ordered this throw - which, by the way, is OEKO-tex and CERTipur rated - because I don't have a white, fluffy throw in my otherwise cream and tan colored house. It arrived vacuum sealed and wrapped with a bow in a miniscule bag measuring 2" x 8" by 8". If you want to travel, say on a cruise ship or on a vacation for a week, and bring a comfort item, this is for you. It's so small that it won't take up hardly any room in your suitcase, but once you arrive at your destination, wow. It expands and fluffs up beautifully. It's super soft and really thick and comfy. It washes and dries very well. (On a cruise ship you could wash in the shower and wring, then hang to dry - it would probably dry overnight, or faster out on the balcony). I tried to get a close-up of the fluffiness but my camera wouldn't cooperate. At $15.99 it's competitively priced and comes with the added bonus of being vacuum sealed. Also has a instruction booklet for keeping the throw looking its best. Highly recommended.

A Perfect Throw Blanket For Your Lounging Area
I absolutely love this throw blanket, I sleep with it every night. It is incredibly soft and looks very nice laid out on a bed or couch. The size of it is perfect to cover me up, as im on the shorter side (5'4). It holds up well in a washing machine and dryer too. It keeps me nice and warm at night without getting overheated. Overall this blanket is a great addition to my home that I bought one for my husband and our daughter as well. I really like these blankets and think theyre worth their value.

Extra Cozy, Generously Sized, and Perfect for Snuggling
This throw blanket is an excellent buy. The price is great, and the sizing is even better than expected. It’s listed as 50 by 60 inches, and while the width is right at 50 inches, the length is definitely longer, closer to about 63 or 64 inches. You can see in my photos that it goes past the full length of my tape measure, which even has an extra couple of inches at the end with no markings. That extra length is a nice bonus. As for comfort, it absolutely lives up to the description. It’s warm, fluffy, and incredibly soft. It’s one of those blankets you just want to wrap up in and stay there. Perfect for getting cozy on the couch. I do have some larger throw blankets, and while those are great when you want something more like a full blanket, this size is much better as an actual throw. It’s very manageable, covers you generously, and still looks neat and intentional draped over a couch or chair instead of looking like a full blanket left out. The stitching is well done with no loose threads anywhere, and the overall quality feels really nice. It’s light but substantial and cozy enough to warm you up and definitely take the chill off. The white color is especially beautiful. It looks clean, fresh, and honestly feels like being wrapped in a fluffy cloud. It also comes packaged very nicely, making it a great option for gifting. This is a super cozy, well-made blanket with generous sizing and a great price. Definitely a five-star purchase.

Soft, Cozy, and Great Value Blanket
I bought this throw blanket for the couch and was pleasantly surprised by the quality. It arrived shrink wrapped, so at first it looked a bit flat, but once I opened it and let it fluff up, it became really soft and cozy. The microfiber material feels smooth and gentle on the skin, and the flannel fleece texture adds extra warmth without feeling heavy. I’ve been using it while relaxing in the evenings, and it’s the perfect balance of lightweight and warm. The striped design gives it a nice, clean look that works well with different decor styles. It also seems well made, with good stitching and no loose threads so far. For the price, it’s an excellent find. It looks good, feels comfortable, and is great for everyday use on the couch or even as an extra layer on the bed.

Like a Cloud! Very Nice Quality!
This throw is one of the nicest at this price point I've ever ordered. There are throws you get that you use every day and throws you get for decor and a statement. This is a very nice statement piece! I'm older with no pets and white doesn't scare me anymore. I wanted a great throw for my dark grey couch to set off my throw pillows and to just brighten up the space. This is a nice THICK throw, its fluffy compared to most throws in the $20-$30 price range and costs less! It is a 100% polyester fabric and will wash well every time. Simply designed with long puffy stripes and a nice texture they are not thin. It's a warm throw without being heavy at all. I would definitely buy others but only needed one in white this was a great value! It did not disappoint it was more than I expected!
