Al-MCM-41 has a hexagonal ordered mesoporous structure, similar to a honeycomb.

The pore size is relatively uniform, usually between 3-5 nm, and can be regulated to a certain extent by synthesis conditions.
The pore wall consists of amorphous silicon oxide, in which aluminum atoms are incorporated into the lattice of the silica tetrahedron in an isomorphic substitution.
