In an online Q&A Video with the BYU Museum of Art, Brian Kershisnik said the following about this work: 

“In thinking about how little we know of the actual details of His birth and how much previous artists through the centuries and millennia have gone into those evens with their imagination, I just determined that I would do the same, and try to make a depiction of the birth of Jesus that was emotionally accurate rather than trying to achieve some historical accuracy which is just not available.” 

He spoke in the same video about how this scene was also inspired by the births of his own children.
