LP version. Michael Beharie (New York) and Teddy Rankin-Parker (Chicago) first met while attending Oberlin College. Since graduating, Beharie and Rankin-Parker each veered into markedly different avenues. In addition to a consistent output of solo releases on NYC-label Astro Nautico, Beharie also recently joined up with the ever-confounding New York ensemble Zs, recently performed on albums by Laurel Halo, Greg Fox, and Colin Self and is a regular composer for dance and film. Rankin-Parker became an in-demand cellist for his prowess in the work of improvisation, avant-garde music, and the more exploratory realms of indie pop, lending his talents to a wide array of bands and collaborators, such as Primus, Iron & Wine, Steve Reich, Pauline Oliveros, Glen Hansard, Father John Misty, International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), Chicago Sinfonietta, and Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble. But after a decade of geographic distance, the duo came together to write and record it's collaborative debut, A Heart From Your Shadow. Rather than jump into stream-of-conscious improvisation, Beharie and Rankin-Parker chose to focus the album's themes via intricately composed pieces. The end result could be described as protest music, brimming with intense energy, harrowing anxiety, and steadfast optimism. All of this finished with a few hired hands: produced by Michael Beharie, mixed carefully by Jim O'Rourke and mastered by James Plotkin. "Intro" sets the grim scene and issues the album's M.O. A doom symphony of urban anxiety, the song shows the expansive efforts this duo is able to accomplish. "Gully" offers muted mayhem that's highly synchronized and militantly percussive. It's an anguished two-step of hope and hopelessness. The hyper-repetitive patterns almost hypnotize you into a zoned-out stupor. "Icon" is a psych-freak out of sorts, but the bombast is counter-balanced by intermittent breaks of ambient compositions. There's a deeper layer still, shown in "Smooth Face", equal parts meditatively uplifting and unsettlingly dissonant. Inner and outer anxieties resonate with actual police sirens in a swirl of tonal turmoil. "Fake Money" is a relatively laid-back drift down a river littered with musique concrète, rustic drones, and effects pedal. "Roses" veers into backlit kosmische anthems. Midway through the track, things drop out completely into an open, fog-covered scene cloudy with keyboard-vocal tones. Closer "Petaluma" offers a sweet and sincere coda, chasing a fleeting moment of spontaneous beauty. The orchestration chaos and permeated distortion of A Heart From Your Shadow is largely about healing, not fear.

Great buy, especially in its price range and perhaps even beyond
Color: A-Silver
Hope not to jinx it and have to change this review in six months but I'm extremely pleased with this machine. I've gone through two DeLonghis that lasted me each 4-5 years and I've liked them a lot, but both have eventually leaked and had quirks that were never ever answered/remedied by their customer service. I bought this Casabrews on spec, after looking through all sorts of alternatives, even hand models. I read through customer reviews, including the negative ones complaining about noise, its weight (or, rather lack of), claims over shoddy materials (its plastic components), alleged issues with its wand and basket, the quality of its shots, and so on. I was concerned about buying a product from a relatively new company with a short track record. But, OTOH, there were some very positive, persuasive reviews online. I'm from a coffee-producing nation and have more of it in my veins than blood so it's an absolute daily must-have that an increasingly leaking DeLonghi wasn't going to provide for long so I was facing an emergency. That this model was on sale at Amazon was a welcome incentive since, by the same token that I know what I like in coffee and scoff at the pretentious, opinionated coffee snobishness that too often characterizes conversations over it in the US, I've never been persuaded by the fancy-schmancy high-end, pocket-gouging machines on the market. While I've only had it for several weeks, I'm delighted with it. It's way faster than my old DeLonghis. I love that I don't have to hover over it watching to make sure it doesn't overflow because it turns itself off--and while I'm perfectly happy with the amount I'm getting without tinkering with it, it's programmable for longer shots. It's relatively quieter--noise complaints are likely from new users of espresso machines unused to their noise. It is lighter than my old machines, but the good news is that the basket fit loosens with use and a light hand on top of it solves the issue. The quibble about the basket falling from the wand seems to be more, again, about unobservant users who don't notice their design and the notch that locks the basket in place. It's also a preferable design than the wire in the DeLonghis, which would get loose and end up in our countertop compost bin when shaking out the puck. I even prefer the wetter pucks of used coffee it produces because they're way easier to scoop out of the basket than the DeLonghi's rock hard ones (even bent one of my demitasse spoons once). And, most importantly, the coffee is ABSOLUTELY FINE, even preferable to what I'd been getting from my old machines. And, hey, if it happens to have a short life, I'll just return and revise my rating and review.

Buono...squisito!
Color: Sterling Silver, Color: Sterling Silver
Arrive and packaged very well. It is lightweight...unsure if it's metal or plastic finished to look like metal...my guess is that "parts" are the latter because the knob for the froth/steam is plastic. Nonetheless, it is well made. Moreover, the price point makes it clear it can't be a premium expresso machine. I realize this doesn't sound like a great review of this product but on the contrary it is meant to say that - it is a quality machine based in the price point. I read the manual and personalized the settings for me and I have very little critique. The 2 in 1 portafilter is quality...the water dispenser "top fill" function is good; no need to remove the unit. Frother unit works well...just wish it pulled out a little more...drip tray could be wider as it's a little difficult getting a wide-mouth cup in without taking out the main tray...not a real hassle though. All in all....it's a 9.5 in my opinion. Functions are great...easy to understand and makes a great expresso, americano, latte and variable of each 👍👍 Great deal for the price!

Read the manual directions thoroughly to make the perfect cup.
Color: Sterling Silver
I’ve been using this machine daily for 9 weeks. I absolutely love it! It’s easy and delicious. It took about 90 minutes to thoroughly read the manual which was very helpful in making the perfect pressure crema. The machine quality is good. If it lasts several years I’ll rate it fantastic. That is tbd. It is a great value for the money and aesthetically pleasant sitting on the countertop. Love it!

Great value
Color: Sterling Silver
Nice machine. Makes great espresso and steam wand works well and heats up fast. Just wish the porta filter was made better with wire clip to hold basket in instead of groove and dimple setup. Used grinds cant be simply tapped out as a single puck. you need to dig them out with a spoon. Not the end of the world but I was spoiled with a Breville Ive used in the past. Still would definitely recommend great unit at this price point. Makes delicious coffee

Time btwn brews
Color: Sterling Silver
Love the sleek look and just the right size for counter top. Makes a great cup and foaming wand is great. Be sure to let first stream of water out before frothing. Definitely need a napkin or towel handy. Only one drawback I can see so far. After making an espresso it takes a bit of time to cool down before it allows you to brew next one. There’s two of us so we need to stagger our espresso making. Espresso could also be a bit hotter. All in all it’s a nice machine and does the job.
