In the aftermath of a devastating tornado that rips through the town of Tupelo, Mississippi, at the height of the Great Depression, two women worlds apart--one black, one white; one a great-grandmother, the other a teenager--fight for their families' survival in this lyrical and powerful novel

"Gwin's gift shines in the complexity of her characters and their fraught relationships with each other, their capacity for courage and hope, coupled with their passion for justice." -- Jonis Agee, bestselling author of The River Wife

A few minutes after 9 p.m. on Palm Sunday, April 5, 1936, a massive funnel cloud flashing a giant fireball and roaring like a runaway train careened into the thriving cotton-mill town of Tupelo, Mississippi, killing more than 200 people, not counting an unknown number of black citizens, one-third of Tupelo's population, who were not included in the official casualty figures.

When the tornado hits, Dovey, a local laundress, is flung by the terrifying winds into a nearby lake. Bruised and nearly drowned, she makes her way across Tupelo to find her small family--her hardworking husband, Virgil, her clever sixteen-year-old granddaughter, Dreama, and Promise, Dreama's beautiful light-skinned three-month-old son.

Slowly navigating the broken streets of Tupelo, Dovey stops at the house of the despised McNabb family. Inside, she discovers that the tornado has spared no one, including Jo, the McNabbs' dutiful teenage daughter, who has suffered a terrible head wound. When Jo later discovers a baby in the wreckage, she is certain that she's found her baby brother, Tommy, and vows to protect him.

During the harrowing hours and days of the chaos that follows, Jo and Dovey will struggle to navigate a landscape of disaster and to battle both the demons and the history that link and haunt them. Drawing on historical events, Minrose Gwin beautifully imagines natural and human destruction in the deep South of the 1930s through the experiences of two remarkable women whose lives are indelibly connected by forces beyond their control. A story of loss, hope, despair, grit, courage, and race, Promise reminds us of the transformative power and promise that come from confronting our most troubled relations with one another.

Engaging, well researched, well written and easy to understand!
Format: Kindle
This is the first time I have read a book of David Jeremiah. I think I have seen him preach on Television at my parent's place when I was on holidays one Sunday morning. This is a very well researched book, that is easy to read, and not too complicated to follow. It is not dry or overly theological like some books tend to be and I have found what I have read so far to be very engaging and the book is a real page turner. I love the subject of Revelations and I find that many of the people who write a lot of them have really differing ideas and a lot of opinion. It is refreshing to see an author do a lot of research and find an amazing amount of quotes to back up what he is saying, yet at the same time be engaging and not dry. I find that at 20% of a book read, that I have already decided whether to shelve a book, or to continue reading in a second session and this will be a book that I read right to its end. As a write myself, I am so impressed with the simplicity of the authors writing, and the subjects that he covers extensively, and yet dare I say it again in an engaging way that is not dry at all. The way he opens each topic up and uses stories, Bible verses and quotes to back up everything he says is the skill of a master communicator. I recommend this book to you Matthew Robert Payne Author of and 18 other Christian books on Amazon

Right on the Money!!
Format: Hardcover
I'm not even half way through this book, but it is remarkably accurate!! Dr. Jeremiah goes through our past 50-60 years, explaining HOW we've gotten to where we are today. We have allowed God and faith to be shunned by society, embracing a more "evolved" way of thinking. It's astounding to read, and reflect upon. We often hear the phrase "end days" and for a long time, I've kind of just nodded in agreement, but this book puts it all in order, and clearly reveals what has taken place, and puts you in the mindset of looking towards the SURE return of Christ in the not so distant future. We are at the stage of Sodom and Gomorrah, and this book will show you why. I would highly recommend this read for those who are interested in how we got here and where we're at now.

Very relavant for today's times
Format: Hardcover
I sometimes felt isolated when it came to reading the bible and then looking up at the news and seeing the parallels and then I found this book. Then I discovered Turning Points and the best minster I ever listened to. Unfortunately he is in San Diego but thanks to modern technology I can listen to him anywhere and anytime. I'm a history buff, but the stories he pulls from the past are none I had heard. His knowledge base of the bible is unmatched in my opinion. He brings past events, the modern nightmare of the world and the bible all together. You can't put it down. After your done you don't feel scared because you know where your salvation lies. It just feels better when you know someone older and wiser than you sees what you see. Now the book will make the round of a small circle of my Christian friends.

I liked the book because it gave encouragement for these days as well as warning others about the approaching Tribulation. I didn't have any criticisms. I think this is a good book for our times to be read by those who seek to prepare.

Great book!

This is a must read for all, Christians and non-Christians. I thoroughly enjoyed all of it. It is written in clear, simple language and gave me a new, different perspective on several current issues that we all face each day.
