"David Adjmi has written one of the great American memoirs, a heartbreaking, hilarious story of what it means to make things up, including yourself. A wild tale of lack and lies, galling humiliations and majestic reinventions, this touching, coruscating joy of a book is an answer to that perennial question: how should a person be?" -- Olivia Laing, author of Crudo and The Lonely City

In a world where everyone is inventing a self, curating a feed and performing a fantasy of life, what does it mean to be a person? In his grandly entertaining debut memoir, playwright David Adjmi explores how human beings create themselves, and how artists make their lives into art.

Brooklyn, 1970s. Born into the ruins of a Syrian Jewish family that once had it all, David is painfully displaced. Trapped in an insular religious community that excludes him and a family coming apart at the seams, he is plunged into suicidal depression. Through adolescence, David tries to suppress his homosexual feelings and fit in, but when pushed to the breaking point, he makes the bold decision to cut off his family, erase his past, and leave everything he knows behind. There's only one problem: who should he be? Bouncing between identities he steals from the pages of fashion magazines, tomes of philosophy, sitcoms and foreign films, and practically everyone he meets--from Rastafarians to French preppies--David begins to piece together an entirely new adult self. But is this the foundation for a life, or just a kind of quicksand?

Moving from the glamour and dysfunction of 1970s Brooklyn, to the sybaritic materialism of Reagan's 1980s to post-9/11 New York, Lot Six offers a quintessentially American tale of an outsider striving to reshape himself in the funhouse mirror of American culture. Adjmi's memoir is a genre bending K nstlerroman in the spirit of Charles Dickens and Alison Bechdel, a portrait of the artist in the throes of a life and death crisis of identity. Raw and lyrical, and written in gleaming prose that veers effortlessly between hilarity and heartbreak, Lot Six charts Adjmi's search for belonging, identity, and what it takes to be an artist in America.

Great Shoe
Size: 10.5 Wide, Color: Black Leather/Black
Great shoe! Especially for those that are on the move in a professional setting for a lot of the day. The only issue I’ve had with these so far are my shoe laces are warping. The shoe itself is holding up great.

A great purchase
Size: 10.5, Color: British Tan/Ivory
These shoes are very comfortable and attractive. Lots of people noticed them when I first wore them. I would not consider them the most dressy shoes you can buy, but they work for "business casual" and most other outfits (but not shorts).

All-Day Comfort for 10+ Hour Workdays. Finally Found a Pair That Holds Up
Size: 12, Color: Black Leather/Black, Size: 12, Color: Black Leather/Black
After years of trying different “comfortable” dress shoes, this is the first pair I’ve owned that I can wear for a full 10+ hour workday without counting down the minutes to take them off. For context, I’m a retail district manager. I’m on my feet most of the day walking stores, standing in conversations, moving constantly. I’ve owned Clarks, Rockport, and even higher-end dress shoes, and while some started out comfortable, none of them held up for an entire day without foot fatigue setting in. These Cole Haan shoes are different. What stands out: All-day comfort: No mid-day foot pain, even after long shifts. Solid construction: Genuine leather that takes and holds a polish well. Supportive sole: Noticeably helps with impact from constant walking. Great value: Performs better than shoes I’ve paid significantly more for. I also appreciate that they hit a nice middle ground stylistically; more business casual than formal, but still sharp enough for most professional environments. For additional context, I am a heavier individual and tend to wear down the outer (lateral) edge of my shoes first. That pattern holds true here as well. The only drawback: After about two months of wearing them 5 days a week (purchased January 7th), the sole shows more wear than I would expect at this point. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s the reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5. I’ll be including a comparison photo between the worn pair and a new pair for reference. That said, I still expect to get around 8–10 months of use out of them, which at this price point is more than fair. Bottom line: If you need a comfortable, reliable, and reasonably priced work shoe for long days on your feet, these outperform just about everything else I’ve tried, and that’s why I bought a second pair.
