The origins of the candy cane began in 1670. The choir director at the Cologne Cathedral handed out the sugary treats to keep his young singers quiet during the Living Nativity service; legend says he bent the sticks to look like shepherd's crooks. The original candy was pure white. By the turn of the 20th century, the canes were being made with their now-familiar red-and-white-striped features, and today candy canes are one of the most familiar and universal symbols of Christmas.
