Introductory thoughts by Radu Lidjienko
Cinema entered our lives because it is made of imagination, fantasy, dreams, illusion – the same things our lives are made of. We are always immersed in fantasies of all kinds, from positive to negative, from joyful to dramatic. Each person, from time to time, prefers one and becomes attached to it, choosing the most suitable film for themselves. No one can escape from dreams. Depressed people live a fantastical version of their dreadful past and their horrible future. We all reinvent our past and our future every day. Facts did not unfold as we remember them, and nothing will happen the way we predicted. We have remembered dozens of different pasts and dreamed thousands of different futures. Nothing can tear us away from our fantasies, from the very first day of life. I believe this is a characteristic of ours, not a flaw. It would be impossible for us to do without it and continue to live. Even the most pragmatic, or even cynical, people are gripped by a fantasy, perhaps that of living in a cold, desolate world, lacking beauty and emotions, or populated by stupid or malicious beings. The philosopher dreams of having clarified the human condition in the universe; the religious person dreams of being forgiven by their god for the horrible things they have done and will do. Some dream of living in a world where only those who are inferior and irrelevant suffer, so they can enjoy their wealth without embarrassment. Others still see suffering, but live the dream of being able to fight it. Musicians live the dream of making their fellow human beings happy. Those who listen to music live in the dream that musicians are special creatures immersed in a life full of stimuli and fulfillment. Music producers live in the dream of having produced music of the highest level, and that this will one day be recognized. I dream that one day it will be possible for us all to meet in the same place, to have a big laugh about it.
