Pre-Echo Press present Beast, a new project and moniker from acclaimed sound/visual artist, Koen Holtkamp (Mountains). A somewhat radical departure from Holtkamp's previous working modes - where sound has typically been treated as an edifice to be sculpted - the works here are far more concerned with the generative possibilities of rhythm. The pieces on Beast developed out of Holtkamp's creation in 2016 of an audio-visual performance that centers on the physical properties of light via 3D laser projections. Rather than simply make a visual element for a piece of music (or vice-versa), Holtkamp created a system that intricately links every aspect of the performance, from the modular synth and virtual instruments to the constantly shifting projections of his "Color Phase" light installations. As form follows function, the sounds created here are by necessity more immediate, more off the cuff, more pattern oriented, and explore a much further range of dynamics than the somewhat amorphous (yet still gorgeous) work. The work harkens back to "Process Music" of the 1970s, being simultaneously minimal and maximal (think Jon Gibson), as well as the lush pop-minimalism of early 1980s (think Soft Verdict), all the while remaining thrillingly contemporary. Beast Vol. 1 was recorded in real time and is presented with minimal edits to divide it into three pieces. It is the slightly rawer and more abandoned of the two volumes. Beast Vol. 2 (PREECHO 008LP) is a more "in studio" version, and as such, retains a more palpable air of elegance while still remaining a side of the same coin.

Pretty Nice
Color: E-Blackpro 4, Color: E-Blackpro 4
I’m not sure why the promotional photos show these hooks with the bent ends pointing down. To me that makes no sense, as it seems they are using them upside down. It makes more sense to me to have the bent ends point up, so the items being stored do not slide off. Additionally, the shorter bent hooks make no sent to have on the top, as they would limit how far back you could place a shovel or other tool. When using the hooks with the bent ends pointing up, you can place your lighter bulkier items on the long hooks, but then use the short hooks for those heavier items (if they fit), as that gets them closer to the magnets and will have less leverage to make the magnetic hooks fall free from the metal they are trying to be attracted to. In my example photos, you can see how the shorter hooks do not obstruct the shovels and other tools from being stored properly and the bent ends then also help to prevent the tools from sliding off the hook. Overall, I am very happy with the hooks. I’ve had a fondness for magnets since I was a kid, so I have a very realistic expectation of the limits of magnets and these magnetic hooks perform as well as I would expect.

Strong magnetic hook with only one small con
Color: E-Blackpro 4
I got the four-pack of magnetic hooks and the magnets are indeed strong. You have to reasonable with how much weight you hang off of these though! The longer hooks help with holding multiple items. I've used them for shovels and rakes and they hold up just fine. The only slight con is that I wish the ends of the hooks curled up instead of down to keep items from sliding off as safety precaution. You can just turn the hook upside down but then the shorter hooks are at the bottom. They work for what I need them and can hold power tools as well. The hooks are sturdy and the magnet power is impressive.

Magnets are strong
Color: E-Blackpro 4
Arrived fast. Magnets are really strong on my husbands metal peg board in the garage outside. The only draw back, the rings are slightly long for a work bench area. Wish they were 3-4''.

Happy with them
I'm putting up shelves around my bed for my books, and so far, the first shelf is holding nicely with these brackets. They seem pretty sturdy and were easy to install with the screws and anchors that came with it. I measured out where i wanted the brackets on the board and then screwed them to it. I then held it against the wall and used a level to make sure it was level, then put a screw in the middle bracket to hold it level while i marked the rest of the screw holes. I did this all by myself, but it would've been a lot easier to do with two people. I plan to buy more and put up more shelves
