A stunning example of a calcite ammonite fossil of the species Asteroceras obtusum from the world-famous Jurassic Coast beach of Lyme Regis, Dorset UK.
The piece of limestone matrix measures 268 mm (10.55 inches) tall and the fossil ammonite measures 84 mm (3.32 inches) across. There are also two smaller ammonites of the species Promicroceras planicosta at the top of the matrix. The ammonites are well preserved and have been prepared out of the rock to reveal the details of the shells. The ribs are very finely defined, and the mix of yellow and brown colours is beautiful.
The matrix has been shaped to make it a sculptural piece that displays wonderfully. A great example of a popular species and impressive in the flesh. The fossil weighs 3540 grams and has a cut flat base to allow it to stand freely on its own for display.
Around 196 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
