Chess has a rich history and has evolved many times to reach its modern form. Thought to have originated from a war game known as ‘chaturanga’, or ‘shatranj’, popular in southern parts of central Asia after 600 BC. In its earliest forms the queen chess piece did not exist, instead there was a ‘farzin’ (or vizier), whose movement on the board was very limited. As the game spread to Europe, the vizier was replaced by the queen, which developed into most powerful piece on the chessboard. The queen grew in size after 1475 and her powers expanded, allowing her to move any number of squares vertically, horizontally or diagonally - combining the moves of a rook and a bishop.
