Seamlessly blending her love of 60s-era pop, rock, and standards with current electronic production, her fun and soulful tracks dance that magical line between feeling utterly classic and totally fresh. After years as a side project, 2019 sees Deidre & the Dark strut to the foreground with the debut album "Variety Hour" - a record of "nostalgic noir-pop enhanced by modern stereophonics" (Culture Collide), that feels perfectly at home on vinyl. Featuring "One Night," a "bold and brassy declaration of love for the 60s girl groups, 70s Philly soul, and modern R&B that delivers the kinds of hooks and euphoria found only in the very best pop records." (WFMU's Sheila B) Inspired by the signature format of golden era variety television shows, each of the album's ten tracks takes on a uniquely different character. "As I was writing and imagining the flow of the record," Deidre recalls, "I pictured costume, lighting and set changes, choreography, staging... It really guided the whole creative process for me." Keeping in line with previous Deidre & the Dark releases, the tracks on Variety Hour have a vignette-esque quality, each featuring a leading lady inhabiting her own mini-world. Variety Hour comes after a collection of singles as well as the Curious Parcel EP which features "Classic Girl" - a song which has become a staple of the band's live set, as well as a hit with film, TV & fashion collaborators, and it's own vinyl single release by Coachella record store curator Alex Rodriguez. In addition to curating numerous conceptual events in Brooklyn, Deidre is also a partner at Brooklyn music/audio production studio and record label YouTooCanWoo, where she composes for visual and musical projects and regularly collaborates with bands French Horn Rebellion and Violet Sands.

Disappointing with too much "sturm und drang".

I was disappointed after the joy of "Happily Never After". I found both characters unpleasant. I've known people like her who broke everything they touched, and had zero consideration other people's property. She always refused to accept responsibility. It was always "Not my fault", or blaming the victim for the valuable she just destroyed. She's not funny. She's not honest, and she's not appealing. And he is a bit of a door mat, letting his father say the most awful things and not setting him straight and walking away.
It's a pity because the premise is good and frequently hilarious, but she's a walking, talking red flag.

Mr. Wrong Number & Ms. Miss Dial

Lynn Painter has quickly become my go-to rom-com author, and Mr. Wrong Number is pure fun from start to finish. A wrong-number text turns into a flirty, anonymous connection that’s impossible not to love. Olivia is messy and relatable, Colin is slow-burn perfection, and the banter is sharp, swoony, and totally addictive.
If you love texting mishaps, flirty sparks, and romances that feel real, this one’s a must-read. 💕📱

One sitting read

I think I might have a thing for text message chains and love letters.
This book is full of witty, sexy banter. My personal faves.
Colin: What would you do if you accidentally texted the wrong person something naughty, and they responded in a way that surprised you? You were so intrigued that you kept coming back to this faceless number. She's sexy, straightforward, effortlessly funny, and you can't stop thinking about her. And then you realize this mystery woman is none other than your unwanted roommate and best friend's sister. She's a dumpster fire in real life, but what if there was more to it than that?
Olivia: Who hasn't started an apartment complex on fire, lost their job, and forced to move back home and live with their brother and his insufferable best friend? Add in some mismatched socks, and this is a typical Tuesday night for Olivia.
I devoured this book.
I opened it thinking I would read a few chapters and fall asleep. 4 hours later, I finished it. IN.ONE.SITTING.
The bags under my eyes today were worth it

Really good! Could have had 5 stars but…

I thought this book was an easy and entertaining read. The MCs had some depth, and the angsty lead up to these two colliding was very well done. I love them together, I felt their chemistry, and this book could have had five stars if it wasn’t for the weirdly rushed and unbelievable way the ending was written. The back and forth was ridiculous and it seems she can’t change the way she has originally perceived him - as a rich, pompous jerk (despite only having his expensive kitchenware and childhood snark as her evidence). Then we are supposed to believe that out of no where, for no reason (apart from finding out he’s moving) she suddenly wants him back? And then despite how hurtful her words had been, he takes her back? Idk this ending was messy, and there didn’t seem to be enough written or enough plot for any of this to be believable. I won’t disregard the entire story because I didn’t like the ending, but I do wish it had been better.
