Description

The Indian Sign LanguageIn 1876 and 1877, Captain W. P. Clark commanded a detachment of Indian scouts including Pawnees, Shoshones, Arapahoes, Cheyennes, Crows, and Sioux who conversed in sign language. They made requests, relayed information, and told stories with their hands, communicating in a language indispensable for quick understanding between Indians of different tribes. The scouts patiently taught Clark the sign system, which he patiently recorded in this book.

In 1876 and 1877, Captain W. P. Clark commanded a detachment of Indian scouts--including Pawnees, Shoshones, Arapahoes, Cheyennes, Crows, and Sioux--who conversed in sign language. They made requests, relayed information, and told stories with their hands, communicating in a language indispensable for quick understanding between Indians of different tribes. The scouts patiently taught Clark the sign system, which he patiently recorded in this book.

Originally written in 1884 for use by the United States Army, The Indian Sign Language is far more than a grammar book or curiosity. Clark worked closely with the Indians who taught him the language, and his respect for them and their way of thinking informs every page. Written for future officers in Indian regions, The Indian Sign Language corrects the sentimental and brutal stereotypes of Indians that led to much misunderstanding.

Clark believed that sign language could assist him to think like the Indians, which he considered essential for a conscientious officer. His book discusses reliably and soberly the facts of plains Indian life as he encountered them in the 1870s and 1880s. Now a classic, The Indian Sign Language is a monument to the desire for understanding between radically different peoples.

Great lip balm
I have had chapped lips for most of my adult life. This product has been the first product that I have used, where my lips are not cracked, peeling or dry. There is no smell or taste, very neutral. I had to use the balm frequently in the beginning, now maybe only several times a day. One tube last a long time I highly recommend this lip balm.

Just ok
These are just simply too large to use as chapstick unless you do both top and bottom at the same time ( no thank you). I threw them away. 3 stars because it appears to be a good product, but they got the packaging all wrong to call it chap stick.

Replaced Vaseline - Far superior product
I received this as a gift a few months ago and it's all I use now. I use it on my lips and on my neck wrinkles. Do not leave it in a warm environment, like hot car or pants pockets, it will get very soft. If it does get soft, i just dab it on ranther than rolling/wiping on. Also its best to roll it down when not in use, but not necessary. I used to be addicted to Vaseline products for my lips and this is far superior in many ways.

Not really good as a lip balm
It is way too melty or liquidy when applying. It's like putting oil on your lips. No staying power. I actually ended using it more as a skin moisturizer like a lotion. It's pretty good for that. I haven't even tried taking it with me in my pocket as I think it'll turn to a liquid like coconut oil down here in sunny hot Florida. .
