Ausgangspunkt ist ein Fehlschuss auf einen alten Berghirsch, der als roter Faden durch die folgenden jagdlichen Erlebnisse führt und den Blick auf unterschiedliche Jagdsituationen im alpinen Raum öffnet.

Im Zentrum steht die Bergjagd auf Gamswild in all ihren Facetten - von der sommerlichen Jagd auf den Gams über die Brunftzeit bis hin zu anspruchsvollen Birschen im winterlichen Hochgebirge. Ergänzt werden diese Schilderungen durch Eindrücke aus der sogenannten „kleinen Jagd“, etwa der Hasenjagd mit der Bracke, der winterlichen Fuchsjagd sowie Episoden rund um das Birkwild.

Neben den jagdlichen Erlebnissen thematisiert das Werk auch die kulturelle und historische Dimension der Jagd im alpinen Raum.
